In a world of mass production I hope you will find my work an inspiring breath of fresh air!
ABOUT ROBIN JONES
The mosaics I create are influenced and inspired by a love of the abstract and my past experience with screen printing and textile design. With mosaic, I am able to create a depth in my art that I was never able to achieve with paint.
I work primarily in glass for its intensity of colour, highly reflective surface and its jewel-like resemblance when used in tiny pieces. These qualities are emphasised by contrasting the glass with matt materials.
I like to use different materials, creating something exciting and unexpected from something mundane (such as roofing slates or rusting metal) and taking the best of my last work and mixing it in with something new. I want my work to constantly evolve.
I encourage people to explore my work both visually and by touch – mosaic can be surprisingly tactile.
With my most recent pieces of art I have attempted to make people think about the destruction of nature by man and how superficial our lives can be – a paradox when the point is made through a piece of art whose prime objective is to be aesthetically pleasing.
Mosiac is often considered a craft rather than fine art, but I think it deserves a place alongside more conventional art mediums. I am constantly looking for different ways to push the boundaries of mosaic and to have it better accepted and respected as a true art form.
I am a member of The British Association of Modern Mosaic (BAMM), The Northampton Guild of Designer Craftsmen and The Fellowship of Professional and Amateur Artists (FPAA).
