COURSE INFORMATION

The following courses have been designed to suit both the beginner and those with some experience in mosaic. The courses offer an excellent opportunity to tap into your creative self, and will give you the skills and self-confidence to tackle further mosaic projects independently.

Run from my home-based studio in Abington, Northampton. I am sure you will find the space inspiring as it is full of mosaic work, both completed and work-in-progress, along with a large selection of mosaic books and resources. I also offer mosaic courses in greece - please visit theolivegrove.co for further information.

All courses are limited to a maximum of 4 students to ensure you get sufficient individual attention. Gift vouchers are also available - The courses make an excellent present for that difficult-to-buy-for friend or relative who already has everything.

Courses start at 9:30 and tend to finish between 4:30 & 5:00, and can be undertaken 7 days a week.

The “Have-a-go” course is suitable for both adults and children aged 10 years and over, provided they have a good attention span and an aptitude for art or crafts.

Larger groups can be catered for on an individual basis. I am also able to bring a course to a location of your choice.

To book a place please email or telephone me on 0780 1921516, tell me when you would like to do the course and I will confirm my availability. Payment for all courses is in full at the time of booking, cheques should be made payable to “Robin Jones”. For the 3-day course where materials are not included in the course price, an estimate for materials will be given at the start of the course and is payable at the end of the course.

I look forward to hearing from you if you have any further questions.

HAVE-A-GO 1 DAY COURSE

As the name suggests this course gives you the chance to learn the basics of mosaic and by the end of the day you will have an understanding of:-

The different tools and methods for cutting
Different uses for mosaic
Basic mosaic design
Grouting technique

We also touch on the difference between the direct and indirect methods and when to use them, and the attributes of different materials.

You will be given help throughout the day to complete a mosaic panel approximately 25cm square, and as long as time permits this will include grouting.

The course normally finishes at about 5:00. The cost is £70 per person including materials.

WORKING WITH GLASS 1 DAY COURSE

This course is suitable for anyone who has already learnt the basics of mosaic.

Working with stained glass substantially expands your colour pallet in a cost effective manner and gives you the chance to introduce larger pieces of “tesserae” to your work. Stained glass also comes with many finishes and special effects and can really bring a mosaic to life.

The courses main objective is to give you confidence in handling glass. During the day we will look at the different tools available and practice the different techniques employed in cutting and shaping glass.

You will be given help throughout the day to complete a panel approximately 25cm square. As the main purpose of this course is to familiarise you with technique, grouting your work will not be included unless time permits. If you do not feel confident enough to grout your finished piece yourself arrangements can be made for me to do this for you (a small additional charge may apply).

The cost is £70 per person including materials.

THE INDIRECT METHODS 1 DAY COURSE

This course is suitable for anyone who has already learnt the basics of mosaic.

It is not always possible to work on your mosaic in its final position - for instance, it would be difficult (and sometimes impossible) to fix pieces directly to a wall.

This course will show you how to work on a temporary surface and transfer your mosaic when finished to its permanent position. We will explore two methods - Working on a mesh and working in reverse on paper.

You will given help throughout the day to complete two simple panels, each approximately 15cm square. As the main purpose of this course is to familiarise you with technique, grouting your work will not be included unless time permits. If you do not feel confident enough to grout your finished pieces you
rself arrangements can be made for me to do this for you (a small additional charge may apply).

The cost is £70 per person including materials.

3 DAY INTERMEDIATE COURSE

This 3 day course is suitable for anyone who has already learnt the basics of mosaic.

The course will give you the chance to attempt a bigger project such as a table top, mirror or a wall hanging, or something for your garden. Your base doesn’t have to be new – you could give a face lift to an old piece of furniture you already have at home.

Consider experimenting with different materials such as old crockery, buttons, dice or roof slates, along with more conventional materials such as stained glass and luxurious Italian mosaic tiles.

The cost of the course is £180 per person plus materials - an estimate for a 24” square table would range from approximately £12 rising to about £60 if you decided to do the whole mosaic in expensive Italian glass.

Please discuss your project with me to ensure I have the right materials for you at the start of the course.

INDIVIDUAL TUITION

If there is a particular topic you would like to learn more about not covered by the courses, or you require assistance on a project you are working on or just need a space to work in, I can provide tuition on a daily basis. Please contact me to discuss your requirements.
